KARACHI:

Important responsibilities in the board are likely to be assigned to Younis Khan and Mohammad Hafeez. Officials are not satisfied with the performance of Sarfaraz Ahmed, and a proposal has emerged to appoint the former batter as head coach even before the West Indies tour. If Sarfaraz is given more opportunities, Younis may instead be assigned another role.

The former all-rounder (Hafeez) is also expected to be included either in the selection committee or as Director of International Cricket.

Meanwhile, it has become very difficult for Shan Masood to retain the captaincy. He has reportedly been advised to step down on his own.

According to details, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering assigning responsibilities to former star players to improve the national team’s performance. In recent days, top officials have held several important meetings with former players.

During the Bangladesh tour, the team suffered heavy defeats in both Test matches, with Sarfaraz Ahmed serving as head coach. Sources say the board is not satisfied with his performance. If they decide not to give him more time, Younis Khan could take over as head coach. Otherwise, the former captain may be given another role within the PCB.

Sarfaraz still has a contract with the board, and if removed from the coaching position, he may be accommodated elsewhere.

Similarly, Mohammad Hafeez also had an important meeting with PCB officials. He previously served as Team Director during the 2024 tours of Australia and New Zealand but did not continue after a change in PCB leadership. He had also made some strong statements afterward.

Now, Hafeez has expressed willingness to work for the betterment of Pakistan cricket but is seeking full authority. During his brief tenure, he introduced some key changes, though he did not get enough time to fully implement his plans. He may be appointed to the selection committee or as Director of International Cricket, with a decision expected in the coming days.

When contacted, Hafeez confirmed the meeting but declined to share details, stating that like the board, he also wants to see Pakistan cricket improve.

On the other hand, Shan Masood’s position as captain is under serious threat. After the defeat against Bangladesh, he has been asked to resign. He has requested the board to give him more opportunities in the upcoming tours of West Indies and England.

The board currently has limited options for a replacement. Salman Ali Agha has not shown strong individual performance, while Babar Azam has been given several chances but has not been able to consistently lead the team to victories.

A decision is expected soon, as the two-match Test series against the West Indies begins on July 25, followed by a three-match series against England starting August 19.
