Actor Sanam Saeed made a striking debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2026 red carpet, drawing warm applause and attention for her culturally rooted fashion statement as she joined an honorary delegation celebrating South Asian women in cinema and the arts.

Her appearance at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 12 to May 23, marked her first-ever walk on the prestigious red carpet and was met with visible appreciation from attendees as she arrived.

Sanam acknowledged the reception with smiles and greetings, thanking the audience for their response.

The actor’s presence formed part of a broader representation highlighting South Asian women’s contributions to global cinema. Her participation was positioned as both symbolic and celebratory, underscoring the growing visibility of Pakistani talent at major international cultural platforms.

For the occasion, Sanam chose a distinctly oriental-inspired ensemble rather than conventional Western red-carpet attire. The handcrafted white and silver halter-neck outfit blended South Asian aesthetics with contemporary couture, featuring intricate mukesh, zardozi and mirror work that drew widespread attention.

She completed the look with a vintage-style braided hairstyle woven with fresh pink and white flowers, paired with white gold diamond jewellery, adding a traditional yet refined cultural touch that stood out amid the global fashion showcase.

She also wore a custom-designed blue ensemble by celebrated Pakistani designer Hussain Rehar, who was present at the event, further anchoring her appearance in Pakistani design identity.

Before her red-carpet engagement, Saeed also reflected on the legacy of women in Pakistani cinema, referencing pioneering figures such as Begum Shamim Ara as foundational to the industry’s history and growth.

Her look quickly circulated on social media, with fashion commentary praising the balance of couture craftsmanship and cultural expression. One widely shared Instagram post described it as “a perfect blend of couture elegance and timeless sparkle on the global red carpet,” highlighting the outfit’s intricate detailing and jewellery styling.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s presence at Cannes extended beyond the red carpet, with prominent Pakistani designer Hussain Rehar also taking his creative vision to the festival’s wider cultural programme.

Rehar is presenting his collection titled “Lahore – A Knot in South Asia’s Loom” at an invite-only showcase held alongside the festival, marking a notable moment for Pakistani fashion on the global stage. The presentation is being staged at Chateau St George, alongside international luxury labels.

In social media posts, Rehar described the collection as an attempt to reclaim South Asian craftsmanship within global fashion narratives, positioning Lahore as a historic source of design and textile heritage. He framed the project as a response to the erasure of traditional crafts from their cultural origins.

His work highlights techniques such as zardozi, phulkari, khussa and maang tikka craftsmanship, arguing that these traditions have often been renamed or detached from their South Asian roots in global markets.

“You cannot rename what you did not make,” Rehar said, stressing that the collection is as much a cultural statement as a fashion showcase. He described it as a “return of signature, stitch and source,” aimed at reasserting the Subcontinent’s influence on global fashion history.

The designer has previously presented collections internationally, including at Paris Fashion Week, further establishing his presence in global fashion circuits and spotlighting Pakistani craftsmanship on international platforms.
