ISLAMABAD:

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has sought Canadian expertise in canola cultivation to reduce Pakistan’s $4-5 billion annual edible oil import bill.

During a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner Tarik Ali Khan, Hussain said agriculture contributes 25% to Pakistan’s GDP and proposed joint initiatives in hybrid seed research, livestock breed improvement and dairy processing. He also sought Canadian technical support for capacity building and disease control. Khan noted that Canada’s agriculture minister is expected to visit Pakistan in July. Both sides agreed to establish a Joint Working Group.
