Pakistan, Iran move to boost rail, road connectivity

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan and Iran have agreed to fully activate the Joint Transport Committee and undertake coordinated measures to resolve transport and logistics issues on a priority basis, as both countries sought to enhance bilateral trade and strengthen regional connectivity.

The understanding was reached during a high-level meeting between Iran’s Transport Minister Farzaneh Sadegh and a Pakistani delegation led by Communications Minister Aleem Khan during her visit to Pakistan, according to an official statement.

The Pakistani delegation also included Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. The meeting focused on regional connectivity, promotion of trade and the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

The two delegations held detailed discussions on a range of proposals aimed at improving bilateral logistics and agreed to fully activate the Pakistan-Iran Joint Transport Committee to address existing challenges, the statement said.

During the talks, Aleem Khan said road and rail connectivity between Pakistan and Iran would be further strengthened in the future, stressing that strong land links were essential for expanding trade opportunities between the two countries.

The minister expressed satisfaction over the restoration of peace in the region and commended the resilience and determination of the Iranian people. He assured the Iranian side that all transport-related issues would be addressed and resolved on a priority basis.

Farzaneh Sadegh raised specific concerns regarding the clearance of trucks and containers at the border and called for measures to improve the flow of goods.

The Iranian minister expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s positive and constructive role in helping de-escalate regional tensions and facilitating the path towards a peace agreement. She said Iran highly valued the support and cooperation extended by Pakistan.

Senior officials from both countries attended the meeting, which concluded with an agreement to take joint steps for the swift resolution of all outstanding issues along the Pakistan-Iran border. (WITH INPUT FROM APP)
