Advises mobile users to renew their national identity cards before their expiry date

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) launched a public awareness campaign regarding mobile SIMs registered on invalid, cancelled or expired identity cards and directed users to update their documents in a timely manner.

According to PTA, mobile numbers that are linked to inactive, cancelled or expired computerised national identity cards of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) could be suspended or blocked under regulatory rules.

The authority advised mobile users to renew their national identity cards before their expiry date so that there would be no disruption in mobile service.

The PTA also clarified that after renewing the identity card, users should immediately update their information in the records of the relevant mobile company so that registration details are correct.

According to the agency, only those SIMs would remain active that were registered on valid and verifiable identity documents, while users who do not renew on time may face suspension of mobile service.

Earlier in the month, the interior ministry had instructed the PTA to act on NADRA’s recommendations in a move aimed at curbing the misuse of mobile networks through fake or inactive identities.

A NADRA spokesperson said that a total of 4,906,611 SIMs would be blocked in phases, adding that the process targeted IDs that had not been renewed or belonged to deceased individuals.

The spokesperson said this action aimed to “enhance national security and strengthen the digital ecosystem by making it more secure and reliable.”
